The three tests to run
1. Question test. Ask a genuine customer question without naming your business. Note what the answer covers and which sources it shows.
2. Source test. Ask a question your website answers particularly well. Note whether your site is cited (and which other sources appear).
3. Business test. Ask about your business by name. Note whether services, location and details are accurate; this tests representation, not unprompted discovery.
Make the tests repeatable: same wording each time, note date and system, record whether web search was enabled, save what actually appeared.

What this shows: what happened in your tests. What this doesn’t show: that AI has permanently ranked your business, that a specific change caused a mention, or that one response represents what every customer will see. The mention rate counts only eligible discovery tests (named-business, comparison, indeterminate and non-recommendation customer-problem tests are excluded). Accurate and inaccurate mentions both count; inaccurate are also surfaced separately.
